Our ebook contains a questionnaire for adults. Suppose you have a highly sensitive child - a test for your child you will find elsewhere. But we will be happy to tell you where you can find it.
To our knowledge, as of today, such self-administered online tests are only available in English. In Polish, they can only be performed under the supervision of a professional therapist.
Here are the places where you can complete the online questionnaire yourself and take the test for susceptible children:
-
Parents can use a special test to evaluate children for HSP. It has been developed based on Aron's research on children (2002).
-
A shortened HSP self-test for children aged 8-18 is available on SensitivityResearch.com.
In-depth information on the Highly Sensitive Personality
If you are genuinely interested in high sensitivity, we invite you to read the articles published on the Empowerment Coaching blog.
The most important is the column entitled Highly Sensitive Person - what is their uniqueness?
In this comprehensive study, you will find, among others, an explanation of what a Highly Sensitive Personality is, who discovered and defined it first, you will find out what are the most important features of this unique personality type and you will receive practical tips for highly sensitive people, thanks to which their lives can change dramatically. This applies to both adults and children.
In addition to the above study, you will find other entries dedicated to high sensitivity, including myths about Highly Sensitive People and special quotes and inspirations for people with this personality type.
Why is taking the test important?
In the case of high sensitivity, we deal with simplifications and myths. For example, Highly Sensitive People are often considered weak or emotionally unstable. Equally, Highly Sensitive People are associated with shyness, clumsiness, and introversion.
However, this has little to do with the truth. It is also interesting that highly sensitive people are often unaware of their uniqueness, and only taking a High Sensitivity Test or reading one of Elaine N. Aron's books puts their self-image in order. Up to this point, they often feel misunderstood by the world and think that something is wrong with them.
They belong to the population of about 20% of people born with a special type of nervous system that uniquely processes information. For this reason, these people possess different sensory inputs and react differently to external stimuli. These qualities like everything in this world, have good and bad sides.
So, it is not the question "How to stop being a Highly Sensitive Person?", but "How to be one and live in harmony with yourself?".
For example, you can achieve it through self-regulation and using your features to benefit yourself and the environment.
High Sensitivity Personality is a relatively young concept and not yet sufficiently widespread, therefore it is often considered a disorder. And it is not! It's just one of the shades of human personality.
For the same reason, high sensitivity is often misdiagnosed in children as a specific spectrum of autism, e.g. Asperger's syndrome.
So, it is worth taking the time and making every effort not to hurt the child as a result of a wrong approach or a superficial diagnosis, condemning them to the undeserved "stigma" of the disorder. How to do it?
You will find the answers to this question in our e-book.
Finally, we would like to touch upon one more aspect selected from the wide spectrum of the Highly Sensitive Person. Research conducted by Elaine Aron and her team confirmed that the trait of high sensitivity does not depend on gender. In other words, there are roughly equal numbers of women and men in the population of Highly Sensitive People.
On the other hand, men obtain lower results in this questionnaire. How is this possible?
You will also find the answer to this question in our e-book on HSP.
Summary of the benefits
As we mentioned earlier, the Highly Sensitive Person is often not aware of this personality trait. We also observe it in our coaching practice at Empowerment Coaching. In the vast majority of cases, our clients who showed symptoms of a Highly Sensitive Personality, confirmed in the next step by a sensitivity test, had not previously heard of HSP nor were aware of the unique features they had.
Elaine N. Aron puts it this way:
"(We are) a package deal. Our sensitive trait means we will also be cautious, and introverted, needing extra time to ourselves. Because most people without this trait don't understand this, they see us as shy, weak, or - the greatest sin of all - unsociable. Fearing these labels, we try to be like others. But this leads to excessive stimulation and nervousness. This causes us to be considered neurotic or crazy, first by others and then by ourselves."
Therefore, the greatest benefit of taking the test is knowing yourself better, organizing your self-image, and better understanding how you process data from the outside, and how your inner life differs from that of most people (after all, there are about 80% of them).
In the case of confirming the HSP trait, it is crucial to realize all the consequences resulting from this fact - both positive and negative ones. This may be, for example, consciously avoiding excessive stimuli or certain specific situations that are not good for you (e.g. noise, staying too long at the computer, bad news and scenes of violence in the media, too many things to do at one time, taking too many responsibilities, arguments or aggressive behavior).
Coaching can be a valuable support for Highly Sensitive People's mental health. Especially, coaching conducted by a professional who is a Highly Sensitive Person.
As Confucius said, "A doctor cannot be a good doctor unless he has been sick himself." One of your keys to success will be learning mature assertiveness. After all, HSP people like to help, right?
Identifying this special personality type significantly speeds up work on self-development in every area of your life - private and professional.
For example, being an HSP makes certain professions and career paths inadvisable. Due to the depth of processing, rich inner life, empathy, and the ability to think strategically, and comprehensively analyze complex matters, a Highly Sensitive Person will always outperform others in certain specific roles and professions. A Highly Sensitive Person also has another natural strength - accuracy and the ability to perform tasks scrupulously. This means you can always rely on them.
However, the most important is that thanks to this questionnaire, you can know, understand, and accept yourself. Then, you may consciously live in harmony with yourself and fully use your talents. It is simply the life of a fulfilled person who feels like he/she is in the right place.
Listen to your intuition and check if you have a Highly Sensitive Personality.
