Not only quiz. Check In-depth information on the Highly Sensitive Personality.
If you are genuinely interested in high sensitivity, we invite you to read the articles published on the Empowerment Coaching blog.
The most important one is the column titled Highly Sensitive Person - What is their uniqueness?
In this comprehensive study, you will find, among others, an explanation of what a Highly Sensitive Personality is, who discovered and defined it first, you will learn the most important features of this unique personality type, and you will receive practical tips, thanks to which your life can change dramatically. This applies to both adults and children.
In addition to the above study, you will find other entries, including myths about highly sensitive people and special quotes and inspirations.
Psychology behind the test. Why is taking the test important?
In cases of high sensitivity, we encounter simplifications and myths. For example, Highly Sensitive People often are considered weak or emotionally unstable. Equally, they are associated with shyness, clumsiness, and introversion.
However, this has little to do with the truth. It is also interesting that HSPS often are unaware of their uniqueness. Taking a High Sensitivity Test or reading Dr. Aron's books is a breakthrough in self-image order. Up to this point, they often feel misunderstood by the world and think that something is wrong with them. They suffer from low self-esteem and struggle with interpersonal relationships.
In fact, they belong to the minority of people (about 20%) born with a sensitive nervous system that uniquely processes information. For this reason, they possess different sensory inputs and intensely react to external stimuli. These qualities, like everything in this world, have good and bad sides. For example, heightened emotional responses refer to both joy, excitement, sadness, and anxiety.
Although Aron's research proved that the HSP trait is not aligned with giftedness, other research conducted by psychologist Elke van Hoof revealed that 87% of gifted people are highly sensitive (Koolhof, 2020).
On the other hand, HSPs are more prone to burnout and easy dysregulation. However, if they learn how to avoid being overwhelmed by sensory input and listen to their subtle cues, they can overperform.
So, it is not the question "How to stop being a Highly Sensitive Person (or be less sensitive)?", but "How to be one, live in harmony with yourself and thrive?"
Practising self-care, improving emotional regulation, and avoiding highly stimulating environments is the key to success..
Sensitive Personality is a relatively new concept that is not yet widely recognized. Therefore, it is often considered a disorder. And it is not! It's just one of the shades of human personality.
For the same reason, sensory-processing sensitivity is often misdiagnosed in children as a specific spectrum of autism, e.g., Asperger's syndrome.
So, it is worth taking the time and making every effort to avoid a wrong approach or a superficial diagnosis, condemning children to the undeserved "stigma" of the flaw. How to do it?
You will find the answers to this question in our e-book.
For the same reason, above-average sensitivity is often misdiagnosed in children as autism spectrum disorder, such as Asperger's syndrome. If you believe you might be on the autism spectrum, and your parents perceived your personality negatively as a child, this may have had a devastating impact on your self-esteem. Over time, it impacted your self-perception, reactions, and daily functioning.
Let's take a quick quiz. Please consider the following statements and see how much you agree with them:
"When I have to compete with someone or am being watched while performing a task, I get very nervous and perform much worse than I normally would."
"When people feel uncomfortable in their usual environment, I know how to deal with it (by changing the lighting, rearranging chairs, etc.)."
"I am easily overwhelmed by sensory stimuli like loud noises, crowds, bright lights, or strong smells."
If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, we strongly encourage you to read our book. It will help you understand your sensitivity. You will accept yourself, recognize your needs, and learn to set healthy boundaries. This should become a high priority for you, allowing you to organize your life in a way that suits your personality.
Finally, we would like to touch upon one more aspect selected from the wide spectrum of the Highly Sensitive Person. Research conducted by Elaine Aron and her team confirmed that the trait of high sensitivity does not depend on gender. In other words, there are roughly equal numbers of women and men in the population of Highly Sensitive People.
On the other hand, men obtain lower results. How is this possible?
You will also find the answer to this question in our e-book on HSP.
Summary of the benefits of taking this test.
As we mentioned earlier, the Highly Sensitive Person is often not aware of this personality trait. We also observe it in our coaching practice at Empowerment Coaching. In the vast majority of cases, our clients who showed symptoms, confirmed in the next step by a sensitivity test, had not previously heard of HSP nor were aware of the unique features they had.
Elaine N. Aron puts it this way:
"(We are) a package deal. Our sensitive trait means we will also be cautious and introverted, needing extra time to ourselves. Because most people without this trait don't understand that, they see us as shy, weak, or - the greatest sin of all - unsociable. Fearing these labels, we try to be like others. But this leads to excessive stimulation and nervousness. This causes us to be considered neurotic or crazy, first by others and then by ourselves."
Therefore, the greatest benefit of taking the test is organizing your self-image, understanding how you process data from the outside, and how your inner life differs from that of most people (after all, there are about 80% of them).
If you confirm the HSP trait, it is crucial to understand all the consequences, both positive and negative. This may be, for example, consciously avoiding excessive stimuli or certain specific situations that are not good for you (e.g., noise, staying too long at the computer, bad news, and scenes of violence in the media, too many things to do at one time, taking too many responsibilities, arguments, or aggressive behavior).
Coaching can be a valuable support for mental health. Especially, coaching conducted by a professional who is a Highly Sensitive Person and can deeply read people's emotions.
As Confucius said, "A doctor cannot be a good doctor unless he has been sick himself." One of your keys to success will be learning mature assertiveness. After all, HSP people like to help, right?
Identifying this special personality type significantly accelerates work on self-development in every area of your life, private and professional.
For example, being an HSP makes certain professions and career paths inadvisable. Due to the depth of processing, rich inner life, empathy, the ability to think strategically, and comprehensively analyze complex matters, a Highly Sensitive Person will always outperform others in certain specific roles and professions. A Highly Sensitive People also have another natural strength: accuracy, and the ability to perform tasks scrupulously. This means you can always rely on them.
However, the most important thing is that with this questionnaire, you can know, understand, and accept yourself. Then, you may consciously live in harmony with yourself and fully use your talents. It is simply the life of a fulfilled person who feels like he/she is in the right place. If you learn how to create a nurturing environment, you can achieve it without therapeutic support and enrich your life experiences.
Listen to your intuition and check if you have a Highly Sensitive Personality.
